First day of 2nd Grade

I can't believe Lance is already in second grade!

The fun started on August 19th with his school's Open House night. Scott came along to meet the teacher and check out Lance's fun classroom.

Jude and Cole had a fun time exploring all the neat things.

August 21st came too fast for Lance and before he knew it, it was time to catch the bus for his first day of school.

Jude was super excited to see the bus and got his backpack out, just in case he got to ride to school too.
After Lance got on the bus, the two younger boys and I drove over to the school to meet him and take his picture at his desk.
Even with Jude tripping on the way over, we still got there before Lance got off the bus.

I think Lance is going to have a great time in second grade. He has a good teacher and gets to sit next to a buddy from last year. Woo hoo! Besides the homework that has increased since last year, Lance says he's enjoying school so far. Success!

Rides, rides, rides!

One of the awesome things about being a Virginia resident is that for the price of a single day pass to Busch Gardens, Virginia residents can by a summer pass and come back as many times as they want! Well, we definitely had to take full advantage of that and this past month we went again to BG with Callie, Bryce, Aunt Jen, Uncle Eric, Allen, Grandmom and Pop Pop. My kids had been talking about for at least a week before we went and they were not disappointed.

Cole thought riding the skyline with Pop Pop was great! He loved pointing out all the things he saw, but especially the "train! train!"

Waiting for the grown ups to do a ride...

Busch Gardens is great because they try really hard to make it a fun experience for the whole family, even the littlest people. There were always fun rides for Cole and Jude to do while the bigger kids went on rollercoasters, and Cole even got to go on the log flume with us! He was super excited about the big "slide". :)

Scrambler!

I think the Arcade might have taken the cake for the little boys this trip. They kept begging to go back.

Swings!
Being pregnant, there was a limited number of rides I could go on, so it was fun to ride the little ones with Jude and Cole. They both LOVED the teacups which ended up being much more intense than I remembered them being. I didn't even spin the wheel in the middle and Cole fell completely over from the momentum. It was a fun ride!

While we waited for the big kids on another ride, Jude and Bryce got temporary tattoos.
Jude really wanted the one that covers your whole face, but not willing to pay that much money for something that's just going to wash off in a few hours, we settled for a glitter tattoo.

He passed over the dragon, the pirate, the guitar and the swords and got...
...a red heart. He's tender, this one. :)

The big kids decided to do the drop tower next, so we got these kiddos some snacks and Jen got them some bubble guns while we waited. Cole had finally given up and took a long nap in the stroller.

Waiting...

Bubble gun!

Pre-ride jitters.

Taking off. Lance and Callie no longer look excited, do they? They did great, though and thought it was tons of fun! They are so much braver than me. Give me a roller coaster any day, but you can keep your drop towers. No way.

And it wouldn't be a true day at the park without tons of treats, thanks to Grandmom. She made sure these kids' hands were full of goodies the whole day.

We ended the day with tons of rain and a quick dinner at the local Cracker Barrel before driving the two hours home to Charlottesville, making it there a little before midnight. We love having family so close!

Dirt, rain and ice--Boys will be boys!

These days we're looking for anything to get us out the door and away from the boredom that summer days at home can become.

Lucky for us there was construction just down the hill from us that provided hours of entertainment for the boys over the course of a week. Cole especially would wake up every morning and ask to see the "trucks", so of course we had to make our way down to the piles of dirt--usually around dinner time, right before bath time. :)

Cole is infatuated with vehicles of any kind, but the larger, the better. He was in heaven with the small bulldozer that sat in the grass for several days.

Don't you love Virginia clay? Since it never washes out of clothes, it really is the gift that keeps on giving.

I love this picture:
He was trying so hard to see inside the bulldozer.

Our friends joined us with their sleds, turning the dirt piles into red snow-covered hills full of fun and laughter.
We were definitely sad to see the bulldozers and dirt go, but don't worry--the memory is forever stained onto the seat of several small pairs of pants.

I think I read somewhere that we've received almost twice the average amount of rain this summer. Twice! While I enjoy the cooler weather the rain usually brings, it does put a damper on our outdoor activities.

Actually, it really just turns into a different type of outdoor activity:
One day while Lance was with his dad, these boys decided the rain was a perfect alternative for playing indoors.

It finally culminated in this:
Two little boys in their skinnies kicking up mud and having a ball.

Valuable life lesson #317: Don't let your 18 month old go down a wet slide while he himself is also naked and wet. He will end up turning into a human projectile, catching air on the bump in the middle of the slide and fly off the end with such force he lands about 6 feet from the end of the slide. Yep. Right after his three-year-old brother did it on the tunnel slide. Check. Lesson learned.

Have you ever been ice blocking? I'm embarrassed to say that I lived for four years at BYU without going once! I mean nothing screams "Mormon" like going ice blocking with all your friends. To be fair, without the help of alcohol and other "recreational" tools, you have to be creative when finding fun things to do.

Okay, so I still haven't gone ice blocking, but I did watch a bunch of people and Jude do it. I currently serve in the youth group at my church and for one mid-week activity they went ice blocking at a local park.

It was a blast! If I wasn't afraid I was going to fall off the block and bounce the baby, I would have been all over it!
Basically, you get these huge blocks of ice (you can buy them in Utah, but here we had to make them), put a towel on top and slide right down.

These kids got up some speed!

Cole wanted a piece of the action and since Mom wouldn't let him do it on the ice, he had to content himself with sliding down the hill on his tummy. It was not as effective as ice. :)

Jude spent a good portion of the evening rolling down the hill and throwing pieces of ice that chipped off the blocks.  (Lance was with his dad this night, so he missed it!)

They did a relay race with the youth...

...but this little guy kept getting to the ice first and stealing it away.
Stinker. He actually made it all the way down the hill (with a little help). I've decided ice blocking is definitely on my list of fun family activities at a family reunion.

And to top off the evening?
More ice!

Crazy boys!
