Happy Birthday, George!

We celebrated George's Birthday in Charlottesville by inviting over some friends for a steak BBQ.

Lily helped me make his cake: red velvet, his favorite.

George manned the grill.

It was fun having some friends from work over. I don't get to see these people very often, so it was nice to get to hang out.

Emily jumped with Jude and Lily on the trampoline! She is so fun!

Some of our favorite people! We love the Elmers!

Crabs, anyone?

Perk #33 of living in Northern Virginia:
The crabs!

To celebrate George's and his mom's Birthdays this year, we bought a bushel of crabs and spent the afternoon talking and eating.

The kids thought the crabs were crazy!

Daddy teaching them how to shuck a crab...
(Is "shuck" even the right word? Peel? Crack? Tear limb from limb?)

Might need to work on your cracking skills, buddy.

Harvesting the meat is truly an art and takes a lot of patience. It takes a handful of minutes per crab to extract the small amount of meat, but it's so worth it!

Grandmom has it down to a science and can pull out huge chunks of crab meat in one go.

Peeling his own under the watchful eye of Grandmom.

I think Jude decided the crab meat wasn't worth the effort.

Still trying to crack the top:

Lance has been spending every weekend with his Dad and Abbey over the summer. Scott recently got a job working for the DEA and commutes to DC Monday through Friday while they try and sell their house in Charlottesville. We missed you, Lance!

The Birthday girl and boy!

I probably ate at least 10 crabs. It was so, so good.

Snuggle time with a 4-week-old baby Lexi.

Lily, Cole and Jude had fun picking tomatoes from Grandmom and Pop Pop's garden. Lily LOVES tomatoes and ate this one like an apple.

Wanna see something funny? Everyone in George's family has told us since Jude was born that he looks exactly like George did when he was little. Guess what?

It's true! I saw this picture hanging up and did a double-take. Jude is George through and through. Not just in looks alone, but in personality as well. He's like a mini-me.

Time for cake!

Grandmom getting her snuggles in:

See the trophy Jude's holding? He found that in George's old bedroom and insisted we bring it home. It's the trophy George received his Senior year of High School when he won Virginia's State Debate competition.

Happy Birthday, George and Mom!

Settling in...

July was full of snuggling our newest little baby and settling into the new "normal". I have to admit, it's been a bit rough. I've heard from several people that baby #3 is the hardest, but I don't know if I believe that. I've struggled with #5 the most. We're getting there, though, and becoming accustomed to the new crazy that is our life.

Who couldn't love this sweet face?

I got brave one day and took all 5 kids to the waterpark with some friends.
Yeah, not doing that again. The kids had fun, but I was a wreck the whole time. Many kind people came up and offered to hold Lexi while I helped Cole and Lily who still can't swim and my friends Heather and Sara were awesome, but it was just a little too much. We'll wait until Daddy can come next time!

The kids all LOVE Lexi! Cole likes to snuggle up gently and love on her soft hair. Lily isn't as reserved in her love. She loves on the baby with every part of her body. Literally. I'll be nursing Lexi and Lily will have to pet her with not just her hands, but her feet as well.

Lexi will be in her little chair and Lily will try to "hug" her by laying on top of her.

If Lexi survives all the love, these girls will be great friends!

Baby, you're a firework!

We celebrated on the 4th of July by staying home and shooting off fireworks of our own.

We had a huge case of sparklers that the kids thought was awesome.
Don't you love the torch? No matches for this guy...

Watching the show:

Lily wasn't too sure about the fireworks at first and spent the first half hiding behind my legs, gasping at the lights and loud sounds.

Cole would have been happy to play with sparklers all night.

It took a bit, but Lily liked the sparklers too.

Lance being "cool" and unaffected by the fireworks.

Happy 4th of July!
