OBX with the Simmons

Sarah and Calvin Simmons have been some of our very best friends here in Charlottesville, so when they invited us to come to the beach for a few days a week before they had to leave FOREVER, I jumped at the chance to spend the time with them.

George had to work, so I packed up all four kids, pulled Lance out of school for two days and drove four hours to the Outer Banks. We met the Simmons at this cute little condo Cal's parents rented and headed to the beach for a few hours of fun.

Ellie LOVES Lily. She is constantly asking to hold her and will adamantly defend Lily against anyone else that might want to touch or hold her. It's pretty hysterical to watch her fend off the affections of Jude and Cole whenever she's at our house.

The water was still very cold, so I spent most of the time walking along the beach with Lily or holding Cole's hand while he walked into the "cold water". The waves were crashing right onto the shore and the boys got knocked over numerous times.

Lance jumped into the freezing water and didn't get out until it was time to go!
This boy is crazy!

Jude tried to "surf", but found it difficult with the strong current.

See what I mean about the waves crashing right onto shore?

Sarah and Cal were great and helped so much with the boys.

Cole really wanted to go into the "green water" (the deep water where Cal and Lance were playing), but the current was so strong and the drop-off so sharp that I only attempted to take him out there once before deciding it wasn't safe.

He sure loved the water, though, and spent the majority of the time running in and out of the surf yelling "cold water! Cold water!" It was super cute.

The beach does a good job of tiring kiddos out. :)

Lance convinced me to go out into the water with him. I didn't last too long--it was VERY cold!

This is the drop-off. Crazy, right? I'm standing up...the beach just kind of ended right there in the "green water". (The brown part is the sand you can see through the water that's only about 6 inches deep.)

Sarah and Cal :)

Jude also spent his time running in and out of the surf. Not quite strong or big enough to venture out into the deeper water, but he didn't need or want to hold my hand as he battled the water.

Lily was a trooper. She didn't much care for the cold water (we got caught by a wave at one point and she got pretty wet in her carrier), but was happy the whole time we were there.

Cole LOVED it!

Bumbo seats are awesome. Lily enjoyed sitting in the sand playing with her toes while we all played.
Ha! I laugh every time I see this picture.

She has the longest eyelashes I've ever seen on a baby.

After playing for a few hours we drove back to the condo where Calvin's parents prepared a delicious dinner. We spent the night chatting and showing pictures of our families to Cal's parents, then woke up, had breakfast of biscuits (made by Cal!) and french toast, packed up and then drove back to the beach where we played for a couple hours before driving four hours home.

Funny story on our ride home:

We snacked in the car, but needed to feed Lily and the boys were getting hungry, so we pulled over into a Chick Filet in Williamsburg, about the half-way point between the beach and home. We walk in and buy our food and go to eat it outside in the gated play area. I was so glad they had one! After playing for a bit and nursing Lily, Jude needed to use the bathroom, so I told him to run back to the women's restroom and I'd meet him there. I take Lily so I can change her diaper and Jude is nowhere to be found. He went to the men's room because he "didn't need help". Okay, I changed Lily's diaper met up with Jude and went back to the play place. A few minutes later, Jude announced that he REALLY needed to go to the bathroom and ran back. Luckily this time he went into the ladies room. I left Lily with Lance and ran back to see if he needed any help. I found Jude in the stall, sitting on the toilet with his underwear in a puddle on the floor. He had accidentally pooped in his underwear and then tried to wash it out in the toilet!!

Gross.

I threw it away, cleaned Jude up, washed hands really well and rejoined the other three kids outside only to find Cole sitting in a puddle of soda. He had somehow managed to poke the straw through the bottom of the soda cup and it soaked him from his belly button down.

Nice.

I leave Lance with Jude and Lily and take Cole to the bathroom to change his diaper only to discover that not only do I not have clean pants for him, I also don't have a Cole diaper--only Lily-sized ones. So here I was, single mom running back and forth the entire length of the restaurant with four kids in tow, one sans underwear and another looking awfully "white-trash" in a dirty shirt and too-small diaper. I didn't have time to watch the other patrons' reactions, but I can only imagine most of them were thinking "Glad that isn't me!"

It took us an hour and a half to get back on the road. Thank goodness for Lance! There was only one logical thing to do after all the crazy back and forth bathroom mess. We had to get ice cream.

Even with the lunch disaster, the trip was fun! Lance said even the long hours of driving was worth it, so I'd count that as a success. And I got to spend a few more precious hours with my friends Sarah and Cal. The only thing that would have made the trip better was if George had been able to go.

Party for the Grads!

As much as I love living in Charlottesville, I don't think I'll ever get used to the huge turn-over of friends that leave every May and June. I guess that's what comes from living in a college town, but my heart is hating it more and more. Every May a group of people that we've come to know and love graduates from UVa and moves on to bigger and better things--jobs, residencies, fellowships.

The day before the big graduation this year we got together with several friends to celebrate their achievements and the start of their new adventures. The Johnsons hosted it at their beautiful home.

The Wotrings. They graduated last year and moved to Virginia Beach but came up for the occasion.

Sarah and Calvin Simmons with Mike and Allison Vedomske.
These people have been some of our best friends and I don't know what I'm going to do without them. The Simmons are headed for an Emergency Medicine residency in Portland, Maine and the Vedomskes have already moved to Baltimore, MD to start a job.

Ellie! This little girl and I are best buddies. I love this munchkin with her beautiful blue eyes and her happy personality.

I'm going to miss my "Ellie fix" that I've gotten on an almost daily basis for the past 18 months.

Good thing we have some new friends that have moved in!
Nick and Amanda Coweleys with their cute daugther Kara. Nick is a first year med student, so they're here for at least four years.

The party was fun! George had to work (as usual :(  ) and Lance was with his dad for the weekend, but the rest of us had a great time!
Chasing chickens!

Heaven for boys!

Croquet anyone?

Kaycie Taylor organized this whole shindig to celebrate her and her husband's PhD's they earned and brought a pinata for the kiddies.

(Jude was so happy to have Cameron to play with! They had moved the weekend before and Jude and Cole were missing their buddies that would come to play almost every day. He kept reminding me that week that he would see Cameron "at the party".)

The grads! Three PhD's and an MD. Not too shabby!

We stayed until George got off work and was able to come visit for about half an hour. I'm so glad we got to spend this time with these wonderful families.

Cheryl Johnson, Stacey Wotring, me, Kaycie Taylor, Allison Vedomske, and Sarah Simmons

Congratulations, Grads! Good luck on your new adventures!

Happy Mother's Day!

With both our mothers in the same town, Mother's Day was a busy day, as is usually the case. Lance had a baseball game in the afternoon the Saturday before, so we didn't make it up to Northern Virginia until late Saturday night. After we put the kiddos to bed at the Glass's, I drove over to my mom's house to say hello to my mom, Stephen, Amy and Laura and didn't make it to bed until 2 a.m. Boy, these late nights are taking their toll.

Mother's Day dawned bright and a little too early when all the kids decided they only needed 8 hours of sleep and got up around 7 (I told you we got to Ashburn late!). Yay. George started breakfast while I fed Lily and then joined him in the kitchen. By 9 we had an amazing breakfast of crepes with all the fixings! Man, I love those things! George and the kids all got me a card and George gave me a gift card to New Balance so I can get some new running shoes! Yes!

This guy is a professional crepe flipper. It's amazing.

Happy Mother's Day, Mom!

After breakfast we went to Church and then came back to the Glass's and attempted some family pictures:

It's always interesting getting everyone situated.

And it always takes several attempts before we get a picture that "will do":

(see those trains and that blue cape around Cole's neck? He never goes ANYWHERE without his trains and his "blue one")

Well, we tried.

We spent the afternoon with some family friends and were lucky to catch Jen, Callie and Bryce for about an hour before we packed up and drove to my mom's house for Mother's Day dinner.

I didn't get her flowers or even a card, but I did make a couple pictures for her:
These are silhouettes that I cut out of vinyl from old family pictures. The one on the left is my mom, me and Amy when we were little and the one on the right is my mom walking with the oldest five on the beach in Florida. I love how they turned out! I just wish I had been able to find a picture with all six kids in it. (Sorry, Jason!) I was planning on doing something similar for George's mom too but I wasn't able to find any pictures that would have worked in silhouette form. Hopefully I can get my hands on a couple soon.

Lily hanging out with Aunt Amy:

For dinner George BBQ'd some three-bone beef that his mom had marinated for us. Thanks, Mom! It was amazing!
Seriously, this is probably my favorite meat ever. Tyler made mashed potatoes, Stephen made rolls, and Glenn made roasted squash. It was such a tasty dinner!

Since it was Mother's Day, Jason was going to Skype with us. There were some technical difficulties on his end, though, and instead of talking to him around 5 p.m. at his assigned time, we had to wait until 8 p.m.! Crazy!

While we waited, we celebrated Amy and Stephen's Birthdays!
Mom made the carrot cake and Laura made pineapple cheesecake.

Lance enjoying some watermelon. I didn't even know he liked watermelon...

Cole was VERY excited about the cake!

And Jude was just happy to be here. See how sweaty he is? He and Mason had a great time wrestling and running around the house together.

Mason, such a stinker!

Baby Grant! He's getting so big!

Jason finally called! Because it was so late he only got to talk to us for 18 minutes instead of 45, but it was so fun! We Skyped so he got to meet Grant and Lily who were both born while he was away. We had Chad on speaker phone so he could talk too. It was fun to have the whole family "together". :)

And of course we had to get our Mother's Day pictures. We'll do it again when we're dressed nicer, but in the mean time these will have to do!
(See Mom's necklace? Chad got her an Origami Owl with the birthstones of all six of us. It's beautiful!)

Happy Mother's Day to the best Moms George and I could have asked for! You ladies are amazing in every way and a great example to our family of unconditional love, support, kindness and sacrifice. Thank you both for all you have done and continue to do for us. Thank you for helping us become the people we are today and for teaching us to put our family and marriage first by your examples. We love you!
